website watercolors, the 'always be' logo, two marvelous new children's books
by Caroline Magerl (Australia!!)
photography by Eric Ochere Green (Kenya!),
Joseph Braun, and Larry Wang (Yay USA!!)
and ART by beloved children! (Yay, Wide World!!)
International award winning Children's Picture book Illustrator Caroline Magerl, Queensland, Australia, who created and donated exquisite watercolor logos to illustrate our commitment to "listening" to the direct lived experience of those we work with -- the children who come to
abbey psychological services (abbeypsychservices.com), and especially the kids we work with through our global mission to accurately hear the direct experiences of war/armed conflict affected refugee children globally through ---
always be listening global initiative (alwaysbelisteningglobal.com.)
Her lyrical paintings and magical stories beautifully conceptualize our desire to attend more closely and accurately to the direct experiences of all children in distress whom we serve in the U.S. through abbey and associated projects, and globally, most recently, through always be listening, global initiative for children of war -- listening to exactly what they experienced, how they coped in those moments, eliciting what remains of their suffering (lingering PTSD symptoms), and matching the children on the basis of this information with similar other children and giving them appropriate treatment together in groups.
We cannot thank Caroline enough for her inspiring art and her continued, visible support of our work!
july 29. 2015, 2016 and 2017
The award-winning children's book, Hasel and Rose, continues to be recognized internationally both for its incredible artwork and for the haunting and compelling, overarching story it conveys of children everywhere !who are confused and lonely at being uprooted from their homes and who are longing for comfort. It arrived in US bookstores in 2016 revised as Rose and the Wish Thing!
Caroline made a wonderful, whirlwind, coast to coast book tour of the US -- She and the American version of Hasel and Rose, entitled, Rose and the Wish Thing, are now adored by US audiences!!
May 2017
Rose and the Wish Thing wins the International Book Award in the US!!
Congratulations, yet again, Caroline!!

heartfelt thanks to contributing photographers!
Eric Ochere Green is our friend, and only embedded global photographer -
he lives and works in Kenya, where he has the pulse of the children and families in Kibera Slum,
and the everyday joys and adversities they encounter.
We love his on-the-spot photos of daily life there, and we can never thank him enough!
Thank you, Eric.
2013 - Present
Creative Santa Barbara, California, Photographer, Joseph Braun, contributed a bank of professional photographs
for use on this site and that of always be listening global initiative (always be listening global.com).
We greatly appreciative his skill and his eye for capturing the present moment and making it mythical.
"Flexibility is my strength; compassion is my gift. One of my core reasons for being is to strive to see things in a new light" (JB).
Thank you, Joseph.
6.23.2015.
Many thanks to Larry Wong, San Francisco Photojournalist who continually crosses the United States photographing people, events, places, (and food!), and has made his work available to abbey and always be listening global. He is an incredible, high energy, very busy, artist, and we are most grateful for his generosity.
Thank you so much, Larry. We are honored to use some of your work!

And, finally -- Thank you! to all the children who send their art to
the blue door page!
(and to all the parents, friends, teachers, and aid workers who collect children's art work and send it in!)
Kids: your page is our website's MOST POPULAR page!!
Your pictures tell the stories of good days and bad days
better than anything grown-ups could ever paint or draw or say in words!
We protect the confidentiality of children in treatment and their art creations.
None of the art used here, to our knowledge, represents material made by identified children
currently working in therapy unless the child gives his assent and the parent/guardian gives permission.
Even when art is gifted to us we request parent permission to receive it and additional permission to display it.
WOW !

You, who are on the road Must have a code
That you can live by.
And so -- Become Yourself
Because the past Is just a good-bye
Teach your children well
Your father's hell did slowly go by
And feed them on your Dreams
The one they pick The one you'll know by
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you.
And you of tender years Can't know the fears
That your elders grew by
And so please help them with your youth
They seek the truth before they can die
Teach your parents well.
The children's hell will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they pick The one you'll know by
Don't you ever ask them why -
If they told you you would cry
So just look at them and sigh And know they love you.
