Effects of toxic stress on the developing brain of young children-
The Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): Changing the Architecture of the Infant, Developing Brain:
Toxic Stress in Childhood
The UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are linked to the world's peace and security (see our site, alwaysbelisteningglobal.com) and aim to ensure that the world's children, as well as adults, attain further peace, an end to global poverty, and, with all other humans, fulfill their potential in human dignity (United Nations, 2015).
This is the very first time that Early Childhood Development has been included as an integral part of the global development agenda. Although it is listed under Educational Goals, it is quite naturally linked to other goals of:
***there are much higher returns if interventions are made for children 0 - 8 yrs. old
For twenty years, available research has shown that
***RETURN ON THE INVESTMENTS MADE IN THE LIVES OF PRENATAL AND CHILDREN FROM AGES 0 - 8 (the UN defines "early childhood" as from ages 0 - 8 rather than 0 - 3) GIVE RETURNS THAT AVERAGE BETWEEN 7 TO 10 TIMES GREATER THAN INVESTMENTS MADE AT OLDER AGES (Carneiro & Heckman, 2003). That research has only begun to be considered.
While children's lives can be effected by many other interventions at older ages, strategic, but cost-effective interventions made during children' early childhoods can mitigate the effects of dire poverty, discrimination, and social inequality, reaping tremendous gains for the children and their communities and countries. (Careener & Heckman, 2003).
global high cost of neglecting our youngest children
sadly, In the US, although the data is there, the message is known to be "Lost in Translation":
Although the science is there, the funding has not kept up with the policies and programs for the wellbeing of children.
"holistic" child development: should be:
early childhood is NOT Las Vegas:
what happens in early childhood DOES NOT STAY IN CHILDHOOD!!
(Eloundou-Enyegue,2014).
Early life experiences exert a profound impact - and the environments/contexts in which they have them - exert a life-long impact - affecting the architecture of the brain, determine what genes are expressed and at what time. Adverse Childhood Experiences ACE's.
(National Scientific Council on the Developing Child, 2010b). . . .(however, see new strong research by Bruce Perry, M.D., Ph.D. et al, which found that positive effects of hows that strong relationship based parenting can offset the effects of ACEs - adverse childhood experiences!!)

- Approximately 5.9 million children die before their 5th birthday (UNICEF, 2016)
- 159 million children under five are stunted (UNICEF, 2015)
- At least 200 million children fall to reach their developmental potential each year (Grantham-McGregor et al, 2007)
- Recent data suggest that globally, approximately one billion children experience violence annually (Hillis et al, 2016).

- evidence-based
- results-oriented
- coordinated, and
- effectively monitored - - - internationally developed assistance works.!!

You, who are on the road Must have a code
That you can live by.
And so -- Become Yourself
Because the past Is just a good-bye
Teach your children well
Your father's hell did slowly go by
And feed them on your Dreams
The one they pick The one you'll know by
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you.
And you of tender years Can't know the fears
That your elders grew by
And so please help them with your youth
They seek the truth before they can die
Teach your parents well.
The children's hell will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they pick The one you'll know by
Don't you ever ask them why -
If they told you you would cry
So just look at them and sigh And know they love you.
